For errors when you open the file locally

If you open your company file on the same computer where you’ve installed QuickBooks, try these steps in order:

  1. 1. Rename the .ND and .TLG files

QuickBooks recreates these files when you rescan with the QuickBooks Database Server Manager or when you open your company file. These files may be corrupted or damaged. Note: renaming them won’t cause you to lose QuickBooks data.

To rename them:

  • Open the folder with your company file.
  • Find the file with the same name as your company file but that ends in .ND and .TLG (for example, companyfile.qbw.nd and companyfile.qbw.tlg)
  • Right-click the file and click Rename. Then add “old” to the end of the file name (for example, companyfile.qbw.ndOLD)
  • Open QuickBooks and try to sign in.

If the error code reappears, try the next step.

  1. Open a sample company file

If you open a sample company file, it’s an indication that the QuickBooks installation is damaged and you need to repair it.

  1. Copy the QuickBooks file to your desktop

If the file opens from your desktop, it means there is a problem with the location where you normally save your file. If it doesn’t open, you probably have file damage.

  • Open the folder that contains your company file.
  • Select the file that ends in .QBW
  • Right-click it and click Copy. Then right-click on your desktop and click Paste.
  • Hold down the control key and open QuickBooks to open the No Company Open
  • Click Open or restore an existing company and open the file you copied to your desktop.
  • If you get the error message again, go to step 4.
  1. Restore a backup

Restore a backup copy of your company file to see if there is a problem with the current company file (.QBW). This may resolve the problem, but if you get an error when you restore the backup:

  • Make sure you’re your computer isn’t hosting QuickBooks
  • Open your company file, and in the File menu, click Utilities.
  • If the Stop Hosting Multi-User Access option appears, click Yes, and in the Company file must be closed window, click Yes.
  • In the location of your company file, copy the path from the address bar (make sure it is less than 210 characters).
  • Try to restore the company file again.
  • If you get the error again, try step 5.
  1. Use Auto Data Recovery to restore your backup

See QuickBooks guidance to recover lost data with QuickBooks Auto Data Recovery.

For errors when you open a file on the network

If you open the company file from a workstation that doesn’t host QuickBooks, try these steps to resolve -6000 errors.

  1. Make sure all workstations have hosting turned off

QuickBooks recommends that one computer or server hosts QuickBooks. Press F2 to open the product information window. Under Local Server Information, make sure hosting is turned off.

If that doesn’t resolve your error, go to step 2.

  1. Rename the .ND and .TLG files and run the Database Server Manager from the QuickBooks Tool Hub

Now run the QuickBooks Database Server Manager from the Tools Hub

  • Select Network Issues in the Tools Hub
  • Click Database Server Manager. If QuickBooks isn’t installed on your server, install it.
  • In the Database Server Manager, click Start Scan if you see your company files. If you don’t, click Browse to locate them, then click Start Scan.
  • Open QuickBooks and try to sign in.
  • If you still receive an error message, go to step 4.
  1. Open a sample file locally
  • In the No Company Openwindow, click Open a Sample File, and open a file.
  • If it opens, go to step 4. If it doesn’t, repair your QuickBooks

  1. Open the company file locally

If the file opens locally, it may indicate there is a problem with the location of the company file. If the file doesn’t open, it may indicate that the file is damaged.

  • Open the folder with your company file.
  • Find the file that ends in .QBW.
  • Right-click the file and click Copy.
  • Go to desktop, right-click on the desktop, then select Paste.
  • While holding down the control key, open QuickBooks in the No Company Open window.
  • Select Open or restore an existing company. Open the file you copied to your desktop.
  • If you still get an error message, go to step 5.
  1. Close all QuickBooks processes
  • Log in as Administrator on the server
  • Use Ctrl+Shift+Escto access the task manager.
  • Show processes for all users. Select the Users
  • End each QuickBooks task (EXE, qbupdate.exe, and QBDBMgr.exe).
  • Open the company file in multi-user mode.
  • If you haven’t resolved the issue, go to step 6.
  1. Check folder permissions

Errors sometimes occur because permissions aren’t set up correctly. Check your folder permissions to share company files.

Try to open your file. If you still have the same issue, go to step 7.

  1. Configure firewall ports and antivirus software

Your firewall or antivirus software may block access to QuickBooks. Check the configuration of your firewall ports and set up an exception to your antivirus software. Contact your antivirus provider for guidance.
