How to Restore Microsoft 365 Exchange Data Using the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange
Restore Microsoft 365 Exchange data using the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange with Virtual Systems hosted M365 backup.
Prerequisites:
- Have Veeam Backup & Replication installed. More information on deploying Veeam Backup & Replication can be found in the Veeam Help Center.
- Connect the Veeam Backup & Replication server to the Virtual Systems Restore Portal Service Provider. If you need a M365 restore tenant, please contact the Virtual Systems Help Desk.
- Have Veeam Explorers installed. More information on downloading and installing the Veeam Explorers can be found in the Veeam Help Center.
- This guide assumes Veeam Backup and Replication is on at least version 13.x. The steps and visuals may be slightly different if using a previous version.
Follow these steps to to restore Microsoft 365 Exchange data:
- On the computer you have Veeam Backup & Replication and the Veeam Explorers installed, open the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange.

- When the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange opens, select localhost > click Connect.

- On the Sign in page, enter credentials and Sign in or Sign in as current user depending on the authentication needed for your configuration.

- The Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange browser opens. On the Home tab, click on Add Store > select Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Service provider...

- The Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Connection window opens.
- Ensure restoreportal... is selected in the first drop down list. If you do not see this URL, please contact the Virtual Systems Help Desk to get an account.
- Ensure Modern authentication is selected in the second drop down list.
- Ensure Default is selected in the third drop down list unless your M365 organization uses any of the defined regions.

- Optional To select a specific point in time instead of the latest , click on Specify point in time.
Also, there are the options to Show items that have been deleted by user and/or Show all version of items that have been modified by user.
- Click on Copy code and click on the https://microsoft.com/devicelogin link.

- Paste the code in from that you copied > click Next.

- Enter the Microsoft 365 username > click Next. The user must have the Global Admin role assigned.

- Enter the password for the Microsoft 365 account > click Sign in. If you have MFA configured on the account, you will need to approve or enter the code in at this point.

- Click Continue.

- The Microsoft authentication page should update to say "You have signed in to the Microsoft Azure Cross-platform Command Line Interface application on your device. You may now close this window." message.

- Go back to the Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Teams. You should see a message that you are authenticated to Microsoft 365. Click Connect.

- If you see the red Connection failed message, please upgrade the Veeam Explorers packages by following the steps here.
- If you see the window that charges for reading from object storage may be billed by your provider, click OK. Virtual Systems does not bill for restoring data.

- You will now be able to browse, search, and restore your Microsoft 365 Exchange data by expanding the organization under All Stores in the left navigation.
